Jan Bruér and Lars Westin's now classic book (the first edition was published back in 1974) on the history and development of jazz conveys in a minimum of space as much as possible about a century-old musical form that has constantly been challenged. Jazz has been declared dead several times, but it has survived and developed, adopted new techniques, been inspired by and mixed with other musical forms.

Bruér and Westin look at the history of jazz from a Swedish perspective. The music is portrayed in its context; the environments of jazz and the people behind the music are given great space.
