MAMBO TIME - FROM HAVANA TO HANINGE
A BOOK ABOUT BEBO VALDES by SAMUEL CHARTERS
In translation by Olle Thörnvall

Cuban music has received a boost in recent years, not least through the Buena Vista Social Club. When pianist, arranger and composer Bebo Valdés left Havana in 1960, he was one of Cuba's leading musical personalities. Forty years later, this Cuban gentleman lives a comfortable family life in the peaceful Stockholm suburb of Haninge. The book about Bebo Valdés describes his path from Quivicán, thirty-seven kilometers south of Havana, his career and many years as musical director of the world-famous Tropicana nightclub, through Mexico City, the United States and Spain, and then through Europe with the Lecuona Cuban Boys and the successful guest performances at Gröna Lund's Tyrol in Stockholm.

Sam Charters, the author of this book about Bebo Valdés, is an American writer and record producer who has written several important works of blues and jazz music. He has produced hundreds of albums by blues and jazz artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Lightnin' Hopkins, Art Blakey, Roy Eldridge and Big Joe Williams.
